in 1962, American scientists detonated an H-bomb in space. The explosion was 250 miles (400 kilometers) up – 100 km is considered the edge of space. The blast and EM radiation on the atmosphere created a spectacular aurora.
The EM radiation also caused streetlights in Hawaii to burn out, electronic equipment to fuse or burn out. The blast also disabled several low orbit satellites. There was no fireball because there wasn’t any oxygen, but the blast was captured in now unclassified film footage.
