Russian military used foot wrapping instead of socks. Technique of wrapping feet in cloth was used since 17th century up until 2013 when they allowed the use of socks and announced the abolishment of centuries old practice.
However thick your socks are, you’ll get holes in them. Which requires replacement or stitching. And if you jog 30km with this stitch you will have your foot severely wounded.
With foot wrapping (portyanki) you don’t get this problem – rewrapping takes less than 30 seconds, plus additional benefit of rotating moist and dry part. One “downside” though – your foot skin is gently polished by your sweat and these sheets – it was not uncommon to get bloody blisters after weakening slippers during your time off.
