The US National Park Service put out a set of guidelines to avoid being attacked by a bear, such as moving sideways away from the bear and vocalizing to identify yourself as a human. They also advised: “Do NOT push down a slower friend (even if you think the friendship has run its course).”
In 1252, Henry III was given a magnificent white bear, presumably a polar bear, by the King of Norway. The bear lived in the Tower of London and was allowed to swim and hunt for fish in the River Thames.
In 2004, a black bear was found passed out in a Washington State campground after drinking 36 beer cans; when rangers tried to scare it away, it climbed up a tree to take a nap. It was caught the next day after returning for more beer.
Polar bear jail (also known as Polar Bear Holding Facility) is a special building in Churchill, Manitoba where polar bears that are considered troublesome or dangerous are isolated before they can be relocated… Before establishing the facility, polar bears who were considered dangerous used to be shot. The premise is that extended captivity would create a sense of danger for the bears so that they will be reluctant to approach the town.
In 2008 a bear was sued for stealing honey by a Macedonian beekeeper. The bear was found guilty, and the beekeeper received 1,700 euro from the state for the damages.
Bears are considered by many wildlife biologists to be one of the most intelligent land animals of North America. They possess the largest and most convoluted brains relative to their size of any land mammal. In the animal kingdom, their intelligence compares with that of higher primates.
During World War I, a Canadian soldier made a black bear his pet and named her Winnipeg. “Winnie” was later a resident of the London Zoological Gardens where she was an adored attraction, especially to a boy named Christopher Robin. The boy even named his teddy bear after her.
