Lady Lucy Houston was a British philanthropist who, after WWI, recognized the need for a strong Air Force. When the British government refused, she funded development of what became the Spitfire. She passed before WWII, and never saw how much that investment paid off.
In the 1970s the entire native population of an island in the Indian Ocean was forcibly removed to establish a naval base. The UK gov’t gave 14.5 million pounds in compensation to the residents, which equals 7,250 per person. They were moved to the Seychelles, which has an average per capital income of ~15k/yr.
